Dry Eye Treatment
Do you blink your eyes excessively? Do you get eye strain? Do you have redness, itching, burning or excess watering of your eyes? Are your eyes sensitive to light, wind, contact lenses, computer screens, etc.? Do you take decongestants, blood pressure medication, hormones, anti-depressants, diuretics, or other medications? If you answered yes to any of the above questions you may be suffering from dry eye syndrome?
Dry eye syndrome is the most common of all eye problems. Almost everyone assumes that gritty, red, watery eyes are just a part of life. You’ll be amazed that we can actually do something about them. Artificial tears are probably the most common form of treatment for dry eye symptoms. These will provide temporary relief, but with prolonged use, some preservatives in artificial tears can actually disrupt the eye’s natural production of tears. This can lead to further aggravation of the condition, or even wash away the natural infection-fighting tear film on the eye. In cases of persistent dry eye symptoms, permanent but reversible closure of the tear duct, sometimes known as punctal occlusion, may be the best solution. Punctal occlusion allows you to retain your own natural tears without the bother or expense of constantly replacing the tear film with artificial tears.
If untreated, severe Dry Eye Syndrome can damage tissue and possibly scar the cornea of the eye, leading to irreversible, sight threatening conditions. Since extreme dryness can cause serious damage to the eye, an examination and diagnosis by a physician is recommended. Call today to set up your exam and find out more about dry eye treatment.
